If you had Direct TV back in the day, you might have remembered stuff like G4 which went over a lot of stuff having to do with video games. One game in particular, which was featured on the show all the time, was something called Mario Kart.
Mario Kart, much like the name suggests, was a go kart racing game featuring Nintendo characters racing around in Nintendo-themed worlds. It was incredibly popular and it actually enjoyed a pretty decent shelf life with new additions to the franchise coming out almost every year.
The game was featured quite a few times on G4 with a program called Arena where people would race head-to-head against one another. Many people argue that while go kart racing was popular before, it was the video games that really drove the popularity through the roof.
Granted, real go kart racing isn’t quite the same as Mario Kart. There are no power-ups or lava pits or anything resembling a coin box. However, as much as real go kart racing differs from the games, the games themselves have benefitted with each new iteration taking on more realistic aspects of physics and handling to feel more authentic.
In many ways, the two play off each other.

It is unlikely that Art Ingels realized he was starting an entire sport when he built his first Go Kart in 1956, but the man who would become known as the “father of the karting sport” certainly knew he was in for a good time. The former hot rodder was working in Glendale, California, at the Kurtis Kraft plant helping to build Indy race cars when he took home a surplus two-stroke cylinder engine made by the West Bend Company.
